Totokaelo at 190 Bowery
Transformation of a former Germania Bank, built in 1898, later inhabited by photographer Jay Maisel and his family. This iconic and mysterious location had been closed to the public for decades. Outside, the property was covered in multilayers of graffiti, and inside were incredible, unseen bones. Old bank vaults were transformed into fitting rooms, room size safes were reimagined to house some of the world's most incredible shoes, basement cracks and corners set for brand spaces such as Maison Margiela and Dries Van Noten. Additions of clean white walls, neon lighting, sculptural mannequins, floor to ceiling drapery and stainless steel curved fixtures helped bring this 19th century building to life, for an iconic and unforgettable retail experience.
